Speaker. it is with sad regret that I Inform our colleagues of the recent passing of an outstanding. legendary labor leader. Teddy Gleason. president emeritus of the International Longshoremens Association. spent 77 years helping his fellow longshoremen light for a better life. He was born in lower Manhattan on Nov. 8. 1900. the oldest of 13 children. His father and grandfather. both Immigrants from Ireland. worked on the docks all their lives. so Teddy grew up with a love and respect for the work of longshoremen. At the age of 15. Teddy was forced to give up an academic scholarship in order to work to help support his large family.
