Speaker. it is with a deep sense of pride that I join my colleagues in recognition of AsianPacific American Heritage Month. The contribution of Asians and Pacific Islanders In every aspect of American life has diversified the foundation and enriched the quality of American society. AsianPacific American heritage is filled with the hope and faith of immigrants seeking life in a new land. defined by bitter struggle and disappointment. strengthened by an abiding belief in the ability to endure hardship and to prevail. Through the values of our culture and tradition. we have defined an America thot is a unique blend of the old and new worids. AsianPacific American Heritage Month Is a time to remember our past. to pay homage to our elders who endured the adversity that is part of the Immigrant experience. and to reflect on how this experience has shaped AsianPacific Americans as a people. It is also a time to address the difficulties that confront us now. and will challenge us in the future. The immigrant experience is a common thread running through the American people. From this experience. we should acknowledge our similarities as a nation of immigrants rather than accentuate our differences as individual people. America has betn the land of opportunity. and liberty has embraced all people who love and seek freedom. The differences in the immigrant people who have settled on these shores have been the basis for racial disharmony and unrest as increasing violence against Asians illustrate. But. the AsianPacific experience is one definition of the American experience. It Is not a better or a stranger experience. but It Is different.
