I dse today In strong opposition to the reduction of SLIAG funding contained in the conference report on LaborHHSEducatlon. While I recognize that the conference report contains many beneficial provisions. the reduction in SLIAG funding warrants its reconsideration. My State of California Is home to 55 percent of all the Immigrants legalized under the 1986 immigration law. When Congress approved the Immigration Reform and Control Act. the Federal Government made a financial commitment to the States. We knew the costs of integration would be high. and we knew this burden would fall on the States. Thats why Congress agreed to spend over $1 billion In SLIAG funds to reimburse the States.
