Mr. President. believers of many faiths. including Latinrite Catholics. suffered great hardship during seven decades of statesponsored atheism in the former Soviet Union. Prior to 1917. there were 150 Latinrite Catholic parishes in the European part of Russia. Despite imprisonment. deportation. exile. and various forms of discrimination. believers in Russia. and elsewhere were strengthened by their faith and remained steadfast in their beliefs. The condition of believers in Russia has improved significantly in recent years. Nevertheless. the legacy of the past has not disappeared entirely. I recently received information from Archbishop Tadeusz Kondrusiewicz on the continuing struggle of Latinrite Catholics in Russia.
