Over the years. it must have been especially difficult for these men to see thousands upon thousands of people. from their own country and from other nations in the region. admitted to the United States ahead of them. While these other immigrants can claim citizenship through family relations. business investment. professional and scientific credentials or political upheavals In their own countries. the Filipino veterans alone can claim U.S. citizenship based on a promise made on the battlefield In recognition of their heroism sidebyside with the U.S. Armed Forces. Yet. that official promise. which one would think would give them priority. considering the circumstances under which it was made. turned out to be a hollow one for decades.
