Like Columbus. many Italians came to America facing extraordinary odds. They came without knowing what lay ahead of them in their new country. Christopher Columbus and Italian immigrants embodied the true American spirit of determination and enthusiasm. The promise of a new and better life for themselves and their children encouraged them to take a risk and look to a new life in a new world. Italians who came to America did so knowing that in order to succeed. they would have to overcome language and cultural barriers. However. the immigrants possessed great energy and passion that enabled them to hurdle each obstacle in their way. It is impossible to name the tremendous contributions ItalianAmericans have made to the United States. They have helped to shape our Nation as we know it by becoming active in every part of our society.
