Shirley is a native of Ventura County. and grew up in Ojal. Her father. a native of Finland who emigrated to the United States. was an artist and sculptor who created many works. including the famous statue of Father Junipero Serra. founder of the California missions. which stands in front of Ventura City Hall. A meticulous recordkeeper. Shirley has a deep interest in local history and is a trustee of the Native Daughters of the Golden West.
