Who could have witnessed the films of recent demonstrations in Germany against gypsies and Asians without recalling the Nazi Kristalnacht of 1938? So elated were we in the collapse of communism and the Berlin Wall in 1989 that we had forgotten that the struggle for freedom is ongoing. that hateful ideas of racism and antiSemitism had never been defeated by the Allies in World War II. but were only subsumed by Stalinist tyranny. and now have been liberated like tigers from their cages by the lifting of the Iron Curtain. We have seen the worst example of this in the former Yugoslavia. if only because in Serbia xenophobia has been promoted and supported by the power of the state. Lurking in the wings are Austria. Poland.
