This year. I am pleased that the subcommittee has recommended over $2 billion for cancer research. The State of Washington continues to receive a heavy refugee population that strains existing social services. The office of refugee resettlement CORR) administers the Refugee Assistance Program which provides a comprehensive program of cash and medical assistance and social services for refugees. If Federal support of State agencies continues to erode in high immigrant States like Washington. the result will be the removal of a safety net for new refugees who risk their lives to begin anew in the United States. Private and State agencies already under pressure from dwindling Federal support will not be able to provide needed services. During the HouseSenate conference on this appropriations bill I will fight to maintain the higher Senate recommendation of $405 million for refugee assistance. Within the Department of Education. my priorities include impact aid which compensates school districts for the costs of educating children when enrollments and the availability of revenues from local sources have been adversely affected by the presence of Federal activities. Included in this program are: payments for "a" children. payments for "b" children. payments for Federal property (section 2). construction. and payments to school districts who are experiencing the closing of military bases.
