Mr. President. I am dismayed that the latest round of U.N.sponsored talks between Greek and Turkislh Cypriot leaders has ended in a stalemate. Once again. Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash has proven to be inflexible on the issues of territory and resettlement of refugees In Cyprus. The small island of Cyprus. which gained independence from Great Britain in 1960. has been partitioned since it was invaded by Turkey in 1974. The 700.000 Cypriots. 76 percent of whom are of Greek ethnic origin and 19 percent of whom are of Turkish ethnic origin. are forced to live In a divided country.
