For that program the President of the United States asked that $25 million be set aside and targeted for some communities that are commonly known by the name of colonias. "Colonias" is a Spanish word meaning colonies. for lack of a better word. They are small communities of MexicanAmericans that spring up here and there along the border in New Mexico. in Texas. and parts of Arizona. Generally they start because somebody Illegally subdivides a piece of property and. before the authorities can get to them. immigrants squat on the property and then. before they are removed. these squatters end up with small structures that are houses. Before much time there are literally scores of people living on these small lots and they eke out a living one way or another. Day by day the little community grows and becomes a colonia.
