Speaker. in 1960. Turkey slipped into Greekoccupied Cyprus and overthrew the Cyprus Government. Not only did this aggression violate the U.N. Charter Article 2(4). but it also obliviated stipulations in the NATO Treaty. Accompanying the unfortunate continuation of this occupation are the human rights violations Institutionalized by the Turkishcontrolled Cypriot Government. Thus far. 1.614 Cypriot citizens have suffered detention while 35.000 lost their homes to unjust confiscation. not to mention the 200.000 refugees created from the situation. Turkeys intentions to gain membership in the European Community [EC] are another significant factor that complicate the reputation of the country. You see.
