Session #102 · 1991–93

Speech #1020188873

Unfortunately. after decades of decline. tuberculosis is coming backand in epidemic proportions. In 1990. the rate of tuberculosis increased 9.4 percent as compared to 1989the largest increase since national reporting began in 1953. This deadly disease can aff jct all segments of our population. It hits hardest among populations such as the homeless. the elderly. the HIVinfected and the drugabusers. We are now seeing the disease in our newly arrived immigrant populations. We are also seeing the disease striking particularly hard in minority communities. and at an earlier age. We are seeing a dramatic increase in the number of cases in children. especially in children under 5.
