I would like to take the opportunity to congratulate the people of Turkey and in particular their parliament under the leadership of Prime Minister Suleyman Demirel for their courageous vote to extend Operation Provide Comfort. By a vote of 228 to 136. coalition forces will be allowed to continue their overflights and provide safety and security for the hundreds of thousands of Kurdish refugees that remain in northern Iraq. This vote continues to show Turkeys desire to be a partner with the United States and to join forces with us to bring democracy and stability to the region. Their acknowledgement of the Ktudish situation and their efforts to alleviate and resolve the problem have clearly placed them as a leader of a democratic and peaceful Middle East.
