I do not think it would be a great deal of money. Additionally. as a policy matter. I believe that those who are denied refugee status. and who enter the United States under the parole program. should have the opportunity to adjust to permanent resident status. However. in light of the fact that a member of the Senate could bring this entire aid package down as a result of this provision. however modest the cost might be. I have agreed to remove it from the Senate bill. Mr. President. the committee amendment does not eliminate section 20(a) of the bill. which extends through 1994 a category for establishing refugee status for certain historically persecuted groups from the Soviet Union. Vietnam. Cambodia. and Laos. This provision. which facilitates the designation of refugee status. is working well and should be extended for 2 years.
