Session #102 · 1991–93

Speech #1020178921

Intelligence and U.S. policy. Moreover many of those same questions began to be raised in the Soviet Union itself. even before the breakup of the empire. Almost 20 articles appeared in Izvestia purporting to give facts which contradicted the official Soviet account given in 1983. and Soviet immigrants came out of the country with first and secondhand accounts. For these reasons. the distinguished Senator from North Carolina ordered his staff to make a review of the information in the possession of the United States Government. to analyze the Izvestia articles. and to debrief Soviet refugees who claimed to have knowledge. Once again he was a couple of years ahead of everybody else. Although the results of KAL 007 staff study produced significant new information about the manner in which both the United States and Soviet Governments handled the situation. the study was not yet ready to be released.
