Army Europe. he was sent to take charge of our efforts to provide relief to the Kurds. who were fleeing northern Iraq. The outstanding manner in which General Shalikashvili carried out this difficult. complex. and sensitive operation is a testament to his extraordinary capabilities and outstanding leadership. As a result of his efforts. the operation resulted in the return of hundreds of thousands of Kurdish refugees to northern Iraq. I know that all my colleagues join me in wishing General Shalikashvili. his wife Joan. and his son Bryant. who is a student at Washington State University. the very best of success in this most challenging assignment in Europe. We will all depend on General Shalikashvilis judgment and leadership.
