Last Tuesday. a platoon of soldiers ruthlessly beat and maimed a group of students who were gathering peacefully to protest the government. In addition Mr. Speaker. over 20 politically motivated killings at the hands of the Haitian military have been reported since May 21. and who knows how many have gone unreported. In light of these incidents. I find it utterly repulsive that the administration claims the Haitians who have fled their country are economic refugees. Well. Mr. Speaker. these socalled economic refugees are being beaten. killed. and arrested for no reason. If that doesnt qualify them for political asylum. then I dont know what does.
