It used to be that Americans started their climb toward the middle class by working day in and day out for a lifetime. if necessary. at jobs that required little or no education or training. The stories of our parents and grandparents and greatgrandparents who came to this country. not knowing the languageor ever learning it. for that matterand how hard they worked. are romantic. True as they are. however. they could not happen today. because the type of jobs that those immigrants took in the streets of this country no longer exist. Disappearance of unskilled jobs has also caused soaring unemployment in our cities. particularly among young men. And with unemployment come serious social ills. including higher crime rates and higher rates of poverty.
