I would like to bring to the attention of my colleagues the anniversary of one of Detroits oldest religious institutions: the centennial celebration of Congregation Bnai David. a distinguished and devoted assembly of individuals in the city of Southfield brought together by individuals of learning and piety. Founded on May 9. 1892. by 11 Jews of Russian origin. Congregation Bnai David is the largest traditional Jewish congregation in the Detroit area. numbering close to 600 families. It was Detroits first such congregation and has been popularly known as the Russiseche Shul. drawn from the huge wave of Jews emigrating from Russia during the era of its foundation. Its name. Congregation Bnai David. was adopted in 1932. when those carrying on the activities of the congregation decided to dissolve its original name.
