Session #102 · 1991–93

Speech #1020161564

The amendment is a step forward toward developing and using counterfeitresistant documents and will help to address the very serious problem in United States of the widespread and growing use of fraudulent documents to obtain jobs. receive benefits. to buy armsthe list goes on and on. I urge my colleagues to look carefully at that amendment. I would also say that I indeed have been through this debate at a different level with regard to the legal immigration bill previous times. and it was very unfortunate that it then went to the House floor and we had to get an additional rule because the debate turned into an ugly debate about identification and Nazis and tattoos and other things which were totally inappropriate and unbecoming. Some of my colleagues. very fine. thoughtful progressive Democrats and Republicans. were appalled that the debate took that level. Nevertheless. we dropped it the last time.
