I was pleased to learn that Syrian President Hafiz alAssad has lifted restrictions Syria had placed on its Jewish minority. This decision. if implemented. will grant Syrias 4.500 Jews fundamental freedoms that they had been denied for years. including the right to travel freely and the right to buy and sell property. Although the decision officially does not allow Syrian Jews to travel to Israel. in practice it could open the door for Syrian Jews to emigrate. Syrias treatment of its Jewish minority has been a longstanding concern of the United States. I. for one. have called upon Syria many times to lift the onerous restrictions it unfairly placed on its Jewish community.
