As we remember today one of mankinds greatest atrocities. there Is still unrest between Armenia and Azerbaijan in NagornoKarabakh. Thousands of innocent people already have perished in this dispute and still many more have been displaced and are homeless. The Turkish Government of today is far removed from the Ottoman Empire of the early 20th century. and the modem Turkish Government should be commended for its humanitarian gestures and relief toward the Kurdish refugees as a result of Saddam Husseins continued aggression In Iraq. But part of growing as a nation in credibility and integrity Is recognition of events of the pastJust as Germany has admitted its culpability In the Nazi Holocaust. and just as the United States Government has come to grips with its own atrocities against native Americans and the internment of JapaneseAmericans during World War II. The enduring tragedy of the Armenian genocide Is that to this day the Government of the modern Turkish State refuses to acknowledge that this crime ever took place.
