In the years surrounding 1920. the newspapers were filled with stories of the plight of the starving Armenians who were reduced to eating grass. Before 1914. over 2 million Armenians lived In Turkey. By the end of 1923. the entire Armenian population of Anatolia and westem Armenia had either been killed or deported. The calculated policy of deportation and extermination implemented by the governments of the Ottoman Empire resulted in the genocide of 111 million men. women. and children. It is only fitting that we take the time to remember these victims to give some comfort to their survivors and to ensure that this example of mans inhumanity to man will never be repeated.
