In 1915. an ancient IndoEuropean people claiming descent from Noah. who maintained their Identity through waves of invasions and centuries of rule by other peoples. experienced their worst disaster when Christian Russia Invaded the Muslim Ottoman Empire which was allied with Germany. Amid the fighting Ottoman forces. fearing military defeat. ordered the deportation of every Armenian in the region. Ottoman authorities marched the Armenians from the Anatolia highlands to the Syrian deserts. in Inhumane conditions of plague. starvation and sheer exhaustion. The gruesome campaign resulted in the death or deportations of between 1 million and 1.5 million Armenians. About half the Armenian population died. The remainder of the population was incorporated into current Armenia or settled in Europe. the Middle East and the United States.
