I want to voice my concern for the flagrant human rights violations of Syria. particularly the hostagelike state of the 4.000 members of the Jewish community in Syria. For many years. Jews have been prohibited from leaving Syria without posting a substantial monetary deposit and leaving behind family members as assurance for their return. In addition to the prohibitions which severely restrict their emigration and travel abroad. Syrian Jews have limited mobility inside Syria and must live in concentrated areas. much like ghettos. Jews who have sought to leave the country. despite these restrictions. have been subject to extreme reprisals.
