When the President declared himself .to be alone in standing up to a thousand lobbyists pushing for loan guarantees. he Instigated a long and acrimonious debate that continues still. What started as a debate on how best to help Israel absorb an estimated I million immigrants. has degenerated into a squabble that threatens the very foundation of United StatesIsraeli relations. It is difficult to understand how we have come to this point. Israel has not asked for further financial assistance. but rather. the means to help themselves.
