The Young Israel movement began 80 years ago on the lower East Side of Manhattan. The movement was developed with two major thrusts in mind. The first was to demonstrate that Americanism and Judaism are compatible. It promoted the fact that one can observe all the tenets of ones orthodox faith. and at the same time be a reasonable. upstanding. and participating citizen. Its second goal was to bridge the generation gap which developed between Immigrant parents and their American born children. Young Israel was the first synagogue movement to promote youth clubs. Boy Scout troops and athletic programs. as a way of combating juvenile delinquency through prevention.
