Speaker. none of us in this body can deny that the basic human rights of the Jews of Syria are being grossly violated. Two of the rights which we in.the United States hold most sacredfreedom of religion and freedom of movementare denied to the Jews of Syria. We in this body should note that the right to emigrate freely has been enshrined in no less a document than the Universal Declaration on Human Rights. to which Syria is a signatory. Thus these rights are not only central to our own constitution. but are guaranteed by the United Nations. It is extremely disappointing that. at a time when the United Nations ideal seems to be finally taking hold in our postcold war world.
