Session #102 · 1991–93

Speech #1020144125

March 14. 1992. is the day designated for world remembrance of and solidarity with Syrian Jewry. Syrias denial of internationally recognized human rights to its Jewish population must no longer be tolerated. Today. I signed a letter to President Haflz Assad. along with several of my Senate colleagues. expressing concern over the number of "deprivations. hardships. and restrictions. faced by the Jewish community. and especially the denial of their right to emigrate." The letter also called for the immediate release of the Sweds and for the restoration of internationally recognized human rights to Jews in Syria. For the Syrian Jewish community. the restoration of these basic human rights is long overdue.*
