Mr. Speaker. today there are approximately 4.000 Jews still living In Syria. They are monitored 24 hours a day by the Syrian secret police because they are Jewish. Although Syrian Jews may have relative freedom of religion. they are continuously denied freedom of emigration and movement. They also endure repressive restriction of fundamental freedoms. In the 1990 report. "Human Rights In Syria." Middle East Watch. "no other community in Syria faces such heavy surveillance and none Is made to feel so completely powerless in the face of authorities." Yet. Assad continues to evade responsibility for living up to internationally recognized standards of human rights.
