Douglas was placed in charge of Fort Vancouver and in 1839. he was promoted to chief factor. Hudsons Bay Co. obtained a royal grant to Vancouver Island in 1849. and 2 years later Douglas was appointed governor and vice admiral of the island. Under his leadership. agriculture and industry thrived in the newly settled region. Early in Oregons history.
