I would suggest that the opposite appears to be the casethat the United States is making very serious efforts to identify real political refugees in order to grant them political refugee status. As of last week. when the State Department came to testify before the Foreign Affairs Committee. the INS had interviewed some 11.000 of the more than 15.000 Haitians who had fled. Of that total. 4.100 individuals have been found to have a sufficiently plausible claini to pursue the claims further in the United States.
