Session #102 · 1991–93

Speech #1020130675

For that reason. I am cosponsoring this bill to suspend the forcible repatriation of Haitian nationals. To return these helpless refugees is an unconscionable and deplorable act. The continuing climate of obscene violence In Haiti makes their return equal to a sentence of death. What more evidence do we need of the conditions facing all Haitians than the recent assassination attempt against Rene Theodore. the man many expected to become the next Prime Minister. We must support those fleeing oppression for the shores of democracy. We must stand with democracy and against totalitarianism. The forced return of the Haitian refugees Is wrong and a suspension is the only way to avoid a tragedy. The Haitian people need and deserve our support. We cannot now force Haitian nationals wishing to remain in the United States to return to Haiti.
