Session #102 · 1991–93

Speech #1020130647

Some groups allege a higher toll exists in Haiti. but my experience has been that these human rights groups have a tendency to make very high estimates. And in discussions with Assistant Secretary of State for the InterAmerican Affairs this week. I was reminded of a very important fact. and I will conclude on this fact. In the nearly 11 years that we have been returning the interdicted Haitians who do not qualify for refugee status. there has not been a single reported case of a repatriated Haitian being harmed. imprisoned. or persecuted in any way as a result of the repatriation. I think that is an extraordinary statement. I think this bill that I present is simple and straightforward.
