I rise today to bring the Senate up to date on the plight of Jews in Russia. Since the beginning of perestroika. Soviet Jewish emigration has increased dramatically and giving many Soviet Jews. and their families and friends. now hope of freedom. Added to the hope of the past is the reality of the present: the demise of the Soviet Union and the conclusion of the cold war. The promise of both the past and present are realbut not yet fully realized. There are still at least 400 people whose right to emigrate is being denied in Russia. And the rise of antiSemitism throughout the successor states gives further cause for concern. AntiSemitism is still very strong in the new commonwealth. especially in Russia.
