Born the 10th child of Norwegian immigrants in 1891. she was teaching piano at Chicagos Hull House by age 6 with famed social services leader Jane Addams as her sponsor and mentor. She graduated from the Chicago Music School in 1911 and moved to Los Angeles 4 years later to work as a teacher and voice coach.
