Session #102 · 1991–93

Speech #1020098223

I think the question of hope. the idea of progress is fundamental in terms of the United States of America. that that next generation is going to be better than the last. When I grew up in the Glen Park neighborhood of Gary. it was my impression that that was the American dream. People immigrated to the United States of America so that they could get a job at that point in either an oil refinery or a steel mill or the ancillary industries around them so that they. for the first time. could make sure that their children graduated from high school. their children could go to college and improve their conditions so that their grandchildren could have a better life. I went to school with a gentleman by the name of Nick Zuckatansky. a fellow Slovak. I went to high school with Nick.
