But the Japanese interest in UlIman does not stop with the poem. The Japanese also have a deep appreciation for UlImans many civic contributions. UlIman. a German Immigrant. was a member of the Birmingham school board for 15 years. a founder of Ternpie EmanuEI. and receives credit from historians for expanding educational opportunities for blacks and providing a high school for black children. UlIman did not begin to write poetry until his 70s and on his 80th birthday his family had his poems printed In a volume. The Japanese have since published UlImans book. and each year donate a portion of the royalties to the Ullman scholarship at the University of Alabama In Birmingham. - Mr.
