Speech #1020085838

We remember Columbus for the daring and vision that propelled him on his extraordinary voyage of discovery. But in honoring the first Italian in America. let us not forget the bravery or determination of the ItalianAmericans who followed him. For many Italian immigrants. America was almost as unknown as it was to Columbus. Most Italians arrived in America with very little money. But ItalianAmericans put their industry and their grit to work and prospered in America. Just as Columbus achieved greatness from humble beginnings. So too did Italian immigrants make their mark on the New World. Their contributions to the richness of the mosaic of American life are numerous and wellknown. In many ways. the story of Italian immigrants is the story of America. They helped build our industries and our universities. They manned our business and our professions.
