The Bureau of Diplomatic Security has been and is responsible for protecting U.S. Government employees and their dependents on official duty abroad. for providing for the physical security of both our diplomatic missions abroad and all Department of State facilities in the United States. and for protecting foreign missions. international organizations. and foreign officials in the United States. The Bureau also provides personal protection to the Secretary of State and other U.S. Government officials. both at home and abroad. Finally. the Bureau conducts investigations of passport and visa fraud. Mr. President. the importance of these responsibilities will be quickly recognized. as will be the difficulty of carrying them out In todays world.
