The celebration of GermanAmerican Day here in the United States will allow Americans of Germanic descent time out to reflect on their achievements as well as on their obligations. It revives the spirits of all GermanAmericans. Madam Speaker. since the arrival of the first German immigrants in the United States on October 6. 1683. their number has grown to an estimated 52 million. making them one of the largest ethnic communities in the United States. GermanAmericans have contributed immensely to all facets of American life and culture. and they will continue to contribute to the development. life. and culture of our great country. These outstanding people have earned this very special day to pay tribute to their achievements.
