Professor Kunin retired in 1989 after he expedenced repeated heart attacks and a worsening condition of diabetes. His wife also suffers from a serious illness. she has a cancerous tumor. Both fear that they may not be physically capable of leaving the U.S.S.R. if the Academy of Arts and Sciences continues to forbid their emigration until 1995. The academy alleges that Professor Kunin knows Soviet state secrets. despite the fact that he never dealt with secret problems. Neither Kunin nor his wife have any relatives in the U.S.S.R.. they do have a son in Israel. The case of Professor Lev Kunin and his wife is. unfortunately. not uncommon.
