For many years. Mauritanias ruling Arab/Berber population has pursued a policy of Arabization of the entire country. As a result. many black Mauritanians have suffered deportation. death. and discrimination at the hands of the Government. In the last 2 years. up to 70.000 blacks have been deported. and between 1.000 and 3.000 have been arrested. Not only does the Mauritanian Government brutally disregard the rights of many of its citizens. but it firmly allied itself with Iraq during the Persian Gulf war. The administration should consider putting increased pressure on the Mauritanian Government to respect the rights of all its citizens.
