He came up with the design of 24 different types of standard machines. short cores. and uniform patterns which were to replace the old ones. Edison was very pleased with the results but never paid Tesla. so Tesla left the company and opted to open his own laboratory in 1887. Four years later. 100 years ago. on July 30. 1891. he became a U.S. citizen. A proud American. Tesla always cherished his naturalization certificates. keeping it in a safe where only he could look at it with reverence and joy. Tesla Is credited with some 700 inventions. Among the more notable ones were the invention of the Tesla coil. which is an integral component in radios and television sets.
