Session #102 · 1991–93

Speech #1020061878

And it would have been a recognition of the longenduring chairmanship of Leo Cherne. On a personal note. it is among my proudest memories that in 1956. I represented the IRC in Austria at the time of the Hungarian refugee crisis. and I subsequently served as a vice president of the organization. Through the years I have looked to Leo Cherne as the keeper of the moral compass that points us in the right direction when it comes to helping refugees. Leo Cherne has informed the Board of the International Rescue Committee that he wished to step aside as chairman. As a man who devoted much of his life to helping the worlds oppressed. he has truly earned his passage.
