Session #102 · 1991–93

Speech #1020061719

I think at one point there were some 24 aircraft airborne at a single moment. ferrying people between those two countries. Today. I want to direct my remarks primarily to the tremendous influx of refugees that are pouring out of the Soviet Union and how Israel can handle that kind of an influx and what we might do to assist in this incredible human endeavor. The numbers involved in this massive influx of refugees are simply staggering. Last year. almost 200.000 refugees streamed into the tiny nation of Israel. This year. about the same number is expected. By 1995. over 1 million Soviet Jews will have left for Israelan immigration that is proportionally equivalent to the entire population of France moving to the United States. Mr. President. the United States has always stood by the side of Israel. and those nations that have sought to relieve the economic and human conditions of those who are caught under terrible circumstances.
