Session #102 · 1991–93

Speech #1020057436

This was the third drunk driving conviction for this alien and yet he was allowed to remain in this country. This is not right and the law should be corrected. If an alien is convicted of murder. rape. assault. robbery. or drug possession. that alien is eligible for deportation. But if an alien is convicted of felony drunk driving after causing serious harm or even death. no deportation can occur. This amendment would add felony drunk driving to the list of crimes that may warrant deportation. The amendment does not mandate automatic deportation. it simply includes felony drunk driving as one of several serious crimes that may make an alien eligible for deportation. Mothers Against Drunk Driving has done an excellent job over the last 10 years in fighting drunk driving and this amendment has their full support. This amendment also has the support of my distinguished colleague from South Carolina.
