Session #102 · 1991–93

Speech #1020056815

Many Peoples: A Declaration of Cultural Independence." I have two serious objections to this report: Firat. that if its recommendations were undertaken in full it would undermine real education in this country. and second. that by so doing. it would undermine some of the common cultural and historical experiences which are the underpinning of our democracy. The report is an indictment of the present teaching methods and subjects. It charges that it is only a part of our culture which is taught. that more weight should be given to "the countrys diverse ethnic traditions and the sufferings of some immigrant groups." according the the Times. That sounds worth considering until one reads further. Columbus would no longer be a discoverer. but a voyager. as if lie had merely decided to take a cruise.
