I believe my bill will set the stage for action on these four sites. which really represent the essential substances of the space programs early years. and for an open discussion on the larger issues of reconciling historic preservation and operational needs. Given the Nations technological bent. its likely well see further conflicts in the future between these two national goals. From these sites. America first journeyed into space. actions which opened a new era not only for our Nation. but for civilization. These actions did as much to define this country and the American experience as the Civil War or immigration or the opening of the West. In the end. it doesnt really matter whether Washington or the State of Florida or some public entity preserves and interprets these sites. But its vitally important that we move toward that end.
